In order to be able to identify international sea vessels in Belgian territorial waters, Tein Telecom realized several years ago the very first Belgian AIS network, which was set up for the Flemish Community (SRK – MRCC). Today, in collaboration with Fabricom, Tein Telecom has set up the Flemish Inland AIS network.
Two waterway administrators, Waterwagen & Zeekanaal and NV De Scheepvaart are responsible for the exploitation and the maintenance of the Flemish inland waterways.
AIS is a standardized broadcast system, operating in the maritime VHF band, which makes the exchange of data between vessel and land possible.
